I was recently diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disease. I had to check into the ER because I was suffering from horrible vertigo, falling, and intractable nausea. I knew at that time what was wrong with me and I needed symptomatic help. The ER doctor was adamant about running a code stroke, an echo, EKG, MRI, CT scan, lumbar puncture. All of the ER staff were occupied with their patients. But I had this fantastic ER nurse who cared about my well-being named Kaycie. She helped not only my physical modalities but also helped me mentally to fully accept this diagnosis and begin my journey through my physical setbacks. Kaycie stopped her busy schedule and sat down with me to check how I was doing and displayed how much she truly cares about her patients. I was scared and had not fully accepted how my diagnosis would affect me. She recognized the shakiness in my voice, grabbed my hand, and slowly came up with a plan of care that had my best interests in mind. It meant the world to me when Kaycie treated me with her kindness, her calming presence, and comic relief, I would have felt so alone and afraid. I felt so much stronger because of her words and warm hugs. She is doing exactly what she was born to do. She is a healer, an empathetic caregiver, and a friend to all her patients. I have personally seen her attention to detail, critical thinking skills, strong communication skills, and high level of respect she gives to people from all walks of life. I am forever grateful and believed that she is an incredible asset to this hospital.
