Kayden Metoyer, MSN, RN
About a year ago, Kayden offered to help me facilitate a "first three minutes" simulation on our unit. This project was started after a code blue on the unit that resulted in many new graduate nurses expressing a lack of comfort around their role in a code. The goal of the simulation was to increase unit safety as well as staff retention, due to adequate resources and education on topics that felt uncomfortable.
Kayden eagerly offered his time to facilitate the simulations for night shift. In the last year, we have conducted 64 total simulations, 32 on nights and 32 on days. Kayden has taken time out of his busy schedule, as a dad to twins and a full-time RN/relief charge RN as well as a clinical instructor. He comes in on days he is not already working to facilitate the simulations.
He spends up to 45 minutes with each simulation group, ensuring each team member feels comfortable and heard during their time. He creates a safe space for learning and understanding, as well as using evidence-based education to provide continuity with the simulation provided.
He has also gone through the first three minutes simulation training with our CPM and a PICU fellow at Seattle Children's to continue understanding how to best educate our staff. The work he has given to this project is above and beyond what is asked of him, and our unit is a reflection of it.
