The patient’s wife appreciated these teachings, as they helped her to understand her husband’s care needs. She stated, “I trust Kayla”.
Kayla was nominated by a patient and his wife, who approached the Clinical Instructor to share about Kayla’s care. The patient and his wife were primarily Spanish speaking. They also were not well versed in the current medical condition that the patient was facing, which was quite scary for them. They had many questions but often felt that their questions and concerns were not fully addressed by the staff, possibly because of the language barrier that existed. The patient’s wife wrote that Kayla took the time to check on her husband frequently, and each time, taught the wife what numbers to monitor and what numbers are normal and abnormal (such as in blood pressure). The patient’s wife appreciated these teachings, as they helped her to understand her husband’s care needs. She stated, “I trust Kayla”. This was based upon the rapport Kayla quickly built, the patience that Kayla executed, the consistency in monitoring the patient frequently, and the communication barrier that Kayla tried to overcome. Kayla delivered patient-centered care that embraced cultural & language-sensitive needs. Kayla “met the patient and his wife” where they were at in their level of understanding, and then took the time and interest to build upon this. She included them in their care, empowering them. This was one nomination by one family; however, Kayla’s Clinical Instructor added that “Kayla is like this with all her patients. She connects with them and makes them all feel special and valued”....Congratulations Kayla!
