Kayla Smith-Koenck, RN
I would like to recognize Kayla Smith for the extraordinary care she provided to me during an emergency visit following a seizure.
When I arrived, I was not myself. I was combative, uncooperative, and frankly rude and insulting. I was confused and unwilling to participate in my care. Despite this, Kayla never once treated me with anything less than patience, professionalism, and kindness.
Both my mother and girlfriend were present and were equally amazed by the level of care and compassion she showed during a very stressful situation.
Kayla went above and beyond to bring my fever down and ensure my safety. She recognized that I was not going to allow her to even start an IV on me. She was able to recognize this and adjusted her approach without escalating the situation.
Instead of forcing things, she focused on what she could do to help me. She moved me from the triage room to a bed, helped make me comfortable, and created a calmer environment for both me and my family.
What stands out most is that even when I was my worst, combative, rude, and uncooperative self, Kayla remained polite, respectful, and compassionate. She never took my behavior personally and never made me feel judged. That level of emotional control, empathy, and professionalism is rare and speaks volumes about the kind of nurse she is.
Because of Kayla, what could have been a traumatic and chaotic experience was handled with dignity and calmness. Her actions made a lasting impression not only on me, but on my family as well.
She truly embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award and represents the very best of nursing.
