Kayla Sommer is a Resource Nurse and she lives up to her title. There are many things she does both for our patients and the unit. In this instance, she was trying to get the best possible equipment for a surgical case coming up. She went through many phone calls/emails/texts and was finally told we would have to rent the equipment even though there is a unit within the system. Kayla was told she could not access the unit at a different facility and would be charged a hefty rental fee as a substitute. Kayla went above and beyond, working with the company and insisting that the fee is waived. She was so persistent that the equipment will now be provided to us without a fee.
As nurses, we are tasked with saving money even when it doesn't seem to directly impact our patients. Although this patient would not have been charged the rental fee, the collective body of patients would eventually have to make up for the expense. I so appreciate Kayla's attitude and persistence. She not only does what is best for the patient but also the surgeon and surgical team. Thank you, Kayla, for the efforts you spent on this process!
