Kayla Whitthoeft 2, BSN, RN, ONC, CPAN, CCRN
Kayla Witthoeft exemplifies the true spirit of nursing through her compassion, selflessness, and unwavering dedication to patient-centered care.
On a day she was not scheduled to work, Kayla voluntarily came in to care for a patient whose life-sustaining treatment was being withdrawn. She had built a strong rapport with the patient's family, and due to the family's inability to be present at the bedside, they specifically requested Kayla to be the nurse caring for their loved one as he passed.
What began as an extraordinary act of kindness became an even greater commitment when the patient was identified as a candidate for organ donation, significantly extending the time and emotional presence required.
Kayla remained at the patient's side in the PACU, providing exceptional care while maintaining the patient's comfort, dignity, and peace throughout the withdrawal process. She thoughtfully played soft, inspirational music at the bedside, creating a calm and respectful environment during an incredibly meaningful and difficult moment.
I am a circulating OR nurse nominating Kayla, and I have been a part of four organ procurements. Of all those experiences, this was the most exceptional care I have ever witnessed provided to a patient prior to going to the operating room. Kayla's presence, compassion, and attention to dignity set a standard that truly reflects the highest ideals of nursing.
Kayla went far beyond her scheduled responsibilities, serving as a compassionate advocate for both the patient and family when they needed it most.
Her actions embody the values of empathy, excellence, and humanity, making her profoundly deserving of recognition through the DAISY Award.
