Throughout this challenging case, Kayleigh consistently demonstrated remarkable empathy, professionalism, and strength that deeply impacted both the patient and their family.
We recently had a patient on Leopard who unfortunately became palliative, with all our best efforts we were not able to get the patient home to pass away. Kayleigh was allocated to this patient during the last three night shifts of the patient's life. Although 2 years qualified, this was the first time Kayleigh had cared for a dying child as a registered nurse.
I am honoured to nominate staff nurse Kayleigh for recognition due to her outstanding dedication and compassion while caring for a terminally ill child. Throughout this challenging case, Kayleigh consistently demonstrated remarkable empathy, professionalism, and strength that deeply impacted both the patient and their family. Caring for a dying child requires a unique blend of medical expertise and emotional resilience. Kayleigh not only provided excellent clinical care but also offered emotional support to the family during an incredibly difficult time.
She ensured that the child’s final moments were as comfortable and peaceful as possible, advocating for the child’s comfort, needs, and dignity every step of the way. Her attentiveness to the family’s emotional state went beyond her role as a nurse. She communicated with sensitivity, ensuring the family felt heard and supported, while helping them navigate their complex emotions. Kayleigh created an environment where the family could spend meaningful time with their child, guiding them with gentle care and understanding through the process of saying goodbye.
In addition to her technical skills and knowledge, it is her compassion and kindness that truly stand out. She has exemplified what it means to provide holistic care, tending not only to the medical needs of the child but also nurturing the emotional and psychological needs of the entire family. Her ability to remain composed, caring, and deeply compassionate in such emotionally taxing circumstances is a testament to her character and professionalism.
