Burn Center had a 19-year-old patient who was admitted with burns to 40% of his body from a welding accident on his first day on the job. The patient had multiple surgeries and overtime became depressed because of his accident and recovery. He lost hope and did not think he would recover from his injuries and started refusing care. Kaylie was able to build a rapport with the patient asking what he liked to do and he said he liked demolition derbies. The patient had mentioned he would like to be able to go to the Blizzard Bash which is a demo derby held in Topeka in January. To help the patient get motivated and meet his goals Kaylie made a reward chart. Kaylie arranged with the event promoter to get him tickets to the Blizzard Bash. In the end, the patient met his inpatient goals before going to rehab and with that, he would get his tickets. Kaylie tried multiple times to contact the promoter to get the tickets for the patient without any response. Kaylie asked for the help of her burn center co-workers to donate money so that she could hold up her end of the bargain, she was able to collect enough money for tickets to the event.
