Kaylin Gibson, BSN, RN
My family and I were suddenly faced with a familiar nightmare. Our first daughter passed away from the same diagnosis as our now third daughter. We were once again admitted to CHCO to give birth and pray for a better outcome. Our daughter was born, and it was totally different than her oldest sister! We were so thankful for the beginning of answered prayers.
Our daughter ended up staying 41 days in the CICU and 23 days in the CPCU. Kaylin Gibson was an advocate for our daughter from the day she got her PICC line to the day we were released from the hospital, and every day since. Through our time in the CICU, we moved rooms often. I stressed each time we walked onto the unit, not knowing if our baby would be in her same room. Once under Kaylin’s care, that all changed. She gave us updates on everything we missed while away- as soon as we walked in. If there was something big going on, we always received a message before arriving back at the hospital.
Kaylin was often our nurse, and we loved and appreciated each time she was. Kaylin was well aware of our daughter’s disdain for being too warm. As she was born in summer, the hospital got warmer, and so did our daughter’s temper. Other nurses had shared that a little ice went a long way in relieving her temper- of course, always checking for a high temperature before resorting to ice. Kaylin was ready and willing to help cool our daughter off with some ice when needed. We were so appreciative of having a nurse understand our baby and her needs. We were blessed to have Kaylin come with us to the CPCU as well.
During our daughter’s stay in the CICU I was so focused on her being well I never thought to bring clothes for our daughter. Once we were placed in the step-down unit, we were heading home for the evening. Kaylin commented, "How about you bring some clothes so we can dress our daughter tomorrow?" It was at that moment I realized we were in a different state of our daughter’s care. We were finally able to dress her! After never getting the chance to dress her oldest sister, this moment will stick with my mom's heart forever. I cried and explained my thoughts to Kaylin, and she met me with a hug. It was exactly what I needed and another way Kaylin not only takes care of her patients with excellence but their families too. Since leaving the hospital, we have been met with check-up texts and catch-ups at our follow-up appointments. We love Kaylin and consider her family!
