Kaylin Morton, RN

I would like to nominate Kaylin for a DAISY Award because of the way she cared for one of our patients during his chest tube removal. This patient had been on our floor for a long time and had had two chest tubes. While she was giving me report at 7:00 am, surgery stepped into the room to take out the second chest tube for our seven-year-old patient. He started crying and said, “I’m scared.” Even though it was the first patient she was giving report on, Kaylin looked at me and said, “We should stay with him.” Immediately she stepped into the room, sat beside our patient, and held his hand. She distracted him by getting him to talk about the beach, and when he got too distressed to keep talking about the beach, she coached him through deep breathing exercises. His chest tube was out before he knew it, and he had a much better patient experience because Kaylin chose to prioritize his care over getting out of work on time. She showed a desire to care for her patient that goes beyond completion of ordinary tasks. Well done, Kaylin.
