We are privileged to work alongside Keira in the PICU. Her skills and unique gifts as a provider are a benefit to our patients, their families, and our team. Keira's greatest strengths, of which there are many, lie in her attention to the essential details of caring for critically ill children and her excellent interpersonal communication skills. Keira without question consistently goes above and beyond ensuring her patients have optimal care. This includes the direct physical care she provides and also the care of the team, linking patients and families with relevant hospital services. We are reminded of an occasion where Keira was caring for an adolescent patient who was frustrated by his inability to communicate. Keira demonstrated patience and compassion and together with the child, her family, and the team established an easy rapport and calming environment that maximized the adolescents’ ability to have their voice and preferences understood. She without exception practices excellent closed-loop communication and readily mobilizes the PICU inter-professional team to ensure the best outcomes for each child and family. She regularly identifies gaps and areas for optimization and brings these concerns forward to the team, along with her own insightful suggestions. For example, she recently discovered a Mother who was absent from the hospital (related to COVID restrictions) and was experiencing difficulties with pumping breast milk. Keira was able to surface this issue and provide the appropriate and timely referent the mother required. With her gentle and wise demeanor, she establishes strong, productive therapeutic relationships with our patients and families. She genuinely provides support, guidance, and validation for family members without judgment. She can often be seen enjoying the smile of a patient, soothing a distressed brow, or quietly conversing with anxious parents in their first hours in the PICU. It is these traits that make her an excellent fit with children of all ages, all diagnoses, all stages of illness, and varied abilities. On numerous occasions, families have asked to have Keira as a core RN because of her particular blend of compassion and skill. As a team that includes advanced practice nurses, nurse educators, and quality specialists we agree that Keira supports patient-focused change and participates fully in activities that optimize service and individualized care. Keira is a natural leader and role model with a true commitment to the pursuit of advancing her skills. She regularly seeks out feedback to practice continual self-improvement. Keira is and will continue to be, an asset to the PICU and the patients and families she serves.
