I would have never imagined that I would start off my nursing career during a global pandemic. I got hired in October of 2020 as a Pediatric nurse and was eager to be working in the specialty. Two months into working, I was pulled off orientation early as my unit was converted to an overflow Adult Med/Surg. On top of being pulled off orientation early, I was now forced to switch gears and re-learn the adult population. I went into nursing to help people and although there is nothing I would rather do, I was stressed and overwhelmed on many days. Someone who has always helped me get through each shift is Kelley Koepp. Being a new grad nurse is scary and nerve-wracking. At times, I've been nervous to ask for help. The first time Kelley met me, she quickly introduced herself and welcomed me onto the unit. She made it known very early on that she is someone I could go to whenever I need help. Since the start of my job, Kelley has taken every opportunity to teach me. I never hesitate to ask her for help because I know she will be there in a heartbeat. Not only has she been an amazing mentor, in some of my most stressful moments she has been someone to help calm and comfort me and reassure me that I'm doing a great job. I can't ever express what this has meant to me. Kelley mainly works in our PICU and I'm over on our PEDS acute unit. She's never officially been my preceptor, but always offers her guidance. Even when Kelley isn't serving as a charge nurse, any time anyone on our team needs help, Kelley is a go-to and gladly helps. She's often there before we ask her. She displays the very best team work and exemplifies leadership in her everyday work. What impresses me most about Kelley hasn't been the fact that she has been so open to helping me and how approachable she has been. What impresses me most is the impact she leaves on all her patients. More often than not, every patient I have ever had after Kelley has expressed to me how wonderful she is. I have personally witnessed several occasions Kelley going above and beyond for all of our patients. She goes out of her way to make them feel comfortable, safe and I've seen and felt her genuine kindness. She finds creative ways to teach our pediatric population and always displays patient centered care by serving as an advocate. On top of all this, she's able to effectively make our patients' family members feel welcomed and makes sure to attend to their needs as well. I know our pediatric patients are in the very best hands when Kelley is working. Any shift Kelley and I work together, I know that I am not alone and that I have someone to help guide me. After seeing her with any patient I know I will be left inspired. As a new grad nurse, I am glad that I have her around because I truly aspire to be an extraordinary nurse just like her. She motivates me to be the best I can be. When I think about the type of nurse that the DAISY Award is made for, Kelley is who I think of. She exemplifies everything and more of what this award stands for. Nurses inspire nurses and Kelley inspires me.
