Kelley is an exceptional nurse; she is dedicated to all aspects of patient care. I was working on the adolescent girls unit and one of the patients didn't want to take a shower because she said the shampoo was damaging her hair. The patient was coming across as a bit challenging and this could have escalated into a negative experience for the patient. Kelley didn't bat an eye, she stepped up to me and said, "don't worry about it, I have some shampoo and conditioner packets you can give her." Kelley went to the staff lounge and returned with the shampoo and conditioner packets. I asked Kelley if she just randomly had the packets and she said, "No. I try to think about what I can do personally to be a positive influence on the individual patient experience and on the unit. I keep little things like these on me. To us, shampoo and conditioner samples may seem like a trivial little thing, but it can make a world of difference to a patient in need. It's a tangible way of saying we care." The patient was grateful as she took the shampoo and conditioner packets and went to her room to take her shower and get ready to face the day. I was grateful to my coworker for stepping in and turning the situation into a positive experience and sharing with me her commitment to exceptional whole patient care.
