Kelley noticed very early that a newborn was clinically jaundiced (at less than 1 hour of age) and initiated the appropriate workup. She appropriately contacted me with her findings and concerns and we were able to get the baby transferred to the NICU quickly and begin aggressive treatment for his blood group incompatibility and severe hyperbilirubinemia. Because of her outstanding efforts and close clinical observation, we were able to treat a baby appropriately. More importantly, she prevented a baby from likely requiring an exchange transfusion and she very likely helped keep this baby from developing significant long-term problems. Excellent catch on her part!
