While transporting a patient for a procedure, Kellie learned from the patient’s significant other that their cell phones had been damaged from a water spill and they were unable to communicate with family. Kellie went down to the kitchen and asked for a bag of rice to see if that would help dry up their electronics to get them working again. She then spent time with that patient’s family member and showed them so much compassion when they told her of all the hardships they had recently experienced. Kellie listened to their story and was present for them in a time of distress. And actually had to change her shirt afterwards because she literally provided “a shoulder to cry on” and her shirt was soaked in another’s tears. Later that day, when difficult decisions plagued this family, Kellie stepped in and mediated to help keep everyone calm during highly emotional times and assisted them in navigating difficult choices. It was an incredibly stressful day for all of us, but I am so grateful that I got to work with this nurse that day. Kellie never let stress or emotions get in the way of advocating for these patients or nurses. While this day was one-in-million, this is her work ethic each and every shift, and RN is so deserving of this award. Plus, the rice trick got at least one of the phones working again!
