Thank you for seeing my pain and for showing such empathy, care, and compassion to me and my son during your shift.
I met Kelly after a long day in the ER at CHOP. It was also 1 day after my son was discharged from the NICU. He was less than 10 days old and he already had 2 hospital admissions. We got to our room in Pediatrics around 11:30 pm on New Year’s Eve. Kelly introduced herself and immediately made me feel at ease. She asked me how I was doing, asked if I had eaten anything all day, and even offered to get me something to eat. After politely declining, she showed up a few minutes later with a bagged lunch and some snacks. That small act of kindness and going out of her way really made a difference and provided a simple reminder that it was ok to also take care of myself. Throughout the night, Kelly was very attentive, compassionate, and answered all of my questions with such grace and care. At one point, Kelly noticed that I was reading a bedtime story to my son on my phone while he was sleeping. The next thing I know— there were 4 books on the side table that Kelly had brought so I could read to my son. One of my favorite quotes is from Maya Angelo “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Thank you for seeing my pain and for showing such empathy, care, and compassion to me and my son during your shift. I will never forget how Kelly made me feel during a very difficult time for me and my family.
