Kelly was able to assure both of us that I was in the hospital best suited to treat my condition and that I was being treated by a team, not just one doctor, but a team of doctors specialized in treating my condition.
My wife and I left our home in Dry Fork, Virginia with the intention of driving to Washington to attend a memorial for my aunt who recently passed away. After approximately 9 hours of driving, we stopped in a rest area along I-64 in Indiana before stopping for the day at a campground in Lincoln City. As I turned to leave the restroom, I browned out and fell. I don’t remember falling but must have. I woke up to several men gathered around asking if I was okay. I remember being barely able to answer them. I was very dizzy and disoriented. They found my wife and together they were able to remove me from the restroom into the general waiting area. I could not stand up and was of very little help to them as they moved me. My wife called 911. An ambulance arrived, assessed my condition, and transferred me to a hospital in Jasper, Indiana. In Jasper, I was told that I had suffered a Saddle Pulmonary Embolism which they lacked the facilities to treat. I was transferred, by ambulance, to Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. On arrival at the ICU, Norton Hospital, I was greeted by Kelly Butz, who told me she would be my nurse. Kelly made sure I was comfortable and taken care of, but what really impressed me was that she also made sure my wife was able to find me once she arrived and made her comfortable in my room. My wife is a very capable person, but she was now far from home facing an uncertain future. It was difficult for me, from a hospital bed, to reassure her that I was going to be okay. Kelly was able to assure both of us that I was in the hospital best suited to treat my condition and that I was being treated by a team, not just one doctor, but a team of doctors specialized in treating my condition. In addition to taking care of me, Kelly attended to my wife’s psychological well-being, as well as making sure she was warm and physically comfortable. The attention Kelly gave my wife was as helpful to me as it was to her. I will be forever grateful for the care my wife and I received during our visit to Norton Hospital. There are several others, nurses, staff, and attendants, who contributed to the success of our visit, but I think the care given to my wife’s well-being is the factor that stands out the most in my mind and makes Kelly Butz most deserving of this award.
