Kelly’s professionalism, caring, expertise, and accountability for her practice came shining through.
I recently transferred from another WellSpan hospital to accept a position with the Forensic Nursing Team in the Emergency Department. I have been beyond fortunate to be paired with Kelly as my preceptor during my orientation. During my first few weeks in the department, I was able to witness firsthand the amazing work this team can do. One of the first patients that Kelly and I cared for together was a 17-year-old who was a victim of sexual assault.
Kelly’s professionalism, caring, expertise, and accountability for her practice came shining through. It was evident that the patient had not been shown much kindness throughout their life. Kelly made sure that all the patient’s medical needs were met, identified that this patient identified as male preferring he/him pronouns, and made sure that this communication was clearly documented in the chart with his preferred name.
She made sure that he had everything he needed and that the appropriate agencies/resources were engaged to assist with safe discharge planning. Before he left, Kelly took the time to find him some clothes, get him a blanket, toiletries to get washed up, and some boxer briefs. When he was handed a new shirt, he rubbed it on his face and said, “Can I really keep this?” When he was handed a bag of toiletries, his eyes lit up like had had just been handed the keys to a new car.
Kelly walked him to the forensic suite so that he could get a hot shower. He had just been through something horrible and yet could be heard humming in the shower. Her demonstration of caring, empathy and expert nursing practice confirmed and reminded me again of why we are all here and how lucky I am to work with her as my peer.
