Patients love Kelly, as do their families. She views coming to work each day as fun and exciting. She loves to reassure and educate families about their child’s surgery which was even more challenging during COVID. During the pandemic parents were not able to come back to the OR with their children, which increased anxiety among the parents. Kelly had a mother that was very apprehensive about why her child was having surgery. Kelly explained the entire procedure in terms the mother could understand. The mom was so moved that she started crying and told her no one had explained this to her until Kelly did. Another example, is when Kelly had cared for a NICU baby that was rushed to Le Bonheur immediately following a C-section. The mother was COVID positive and was alone at MLH – Germantown. The baby was less than 24 hours old and had to go to surgery. Kelly was so compassionate with the mom. She FaceTimed with the mother before taking the child into surgery to allow the mom to see her child before the procedure. That was the mom’s first time seeing her baby, and she was sobbing and very moved that Kelly took the time to make sure she felt comfortable before taking the baby back to the OR.
