Our nurse, Kelly, immediately became like a loving, caring, compassionate family member - who just happened to also know what to do medically, of course.
My 82 year "young" sister was admitted with excruciating pain in her back. The next day we found that she had multiple myeloma and were devastated. The doctors needed to manage her pain. Then she had her first chemo treatment the next morning, was sent to ICU, and we then learned the chemo had put toxins in her kidneys. Our nurse, Kelly, immediately became like a loving, caring, compassionate family member - who just happened to also know what to do medically, of course. She would come into the room and say, "Hi, sweet pea" to my sister and would arrange her so she was in a comfortable position. She made us feel good - always asking if there was anything we needed. I spent 10 nights with my sister, and in the early a.m. Kelly would make sure I had coffee! Simple touches - like patting her on the forehead, giving her a kiss - none of the other nurses did - some were good but couldn't even compare to Kelly!! My sister passed away, and her son and I will forever be grateful that she had Kelly.
