Kelly was caring for a patient who she felt was not okay, even though his vitals showed otherwise. During her shift, she kept a close monitor on him and was really concerned. Her gut feeling was something wasn't right with the patient. The patient then started presenting as if he was possibly having a stroke. Kelly immediately called a stroke RRT and they were able to get this patient to a higher level of care. Before the RRT was called, she presented her case to the Charge RN and the interdisciplinary team during morning rounds. She also spoke with a physician about her concerns. I knew the patient when I leader rounded on him on the day of admission and the next. He was alert, witty and fun to talk to. I am glad Kelly trusted her gut about the patient because even though it was her first time to care for him, she knew there was something wrong but couldn't clearly point it out. I know this may seem like another day in the life of a nurse, but to be present and to see her in action was amazing!
