Kelly is the type of person who can brighten your day. If she is working you know that despite the stress and craziness a shift can bring, you are guaranteed to smile that day. Kelly has a way of bringing joy to her co-workers, but especially to her patients. It was Valentine's Day and a typically busy day on 6 Marian. Kelly had a patient who needed a blood transfusion prior to surgery, a very anxious patient who needed a new IV access and lastly, an elderly patient who continued to yell because she was uncomfortable. Kelly sat with this particular patient who told Kelly that she has no one for Valentine's Day. Despite being very busy, and her pre-op patient about to get called to the OR any time, Kelly ran down to the gift shop and purchased the patient a heart shaped balloon and a stick of gum. Kelly then went into the patient's room and with all her heart said "Happy Valentine's Day!" I witnessed the light that sparkled in this patient's eyes and the genuine smile that screamed joy. The patient had forgotten how uncomfortable she was and said to Kelly, "I love you!" Kelly, from the bottom of her heart, replied, "I love you too!" This is why I believe Kelly should receive The DAISY Award. The care and compassion she shows to her patients truly exemplifies the spirit of this award.
