Kelsey Beck, RN, BSN
Kelsey Beck went over and beyond extraordinary compassionate care. This was a day of high patient volume and influx of patients being triaged in our ED. This incident stood out from a Hospitalist point of view because Kelsey went beyond her routine triaging of patients that day.
There was a patient sent over to our ED by the orthopedic team for weakness. The patient was going to be admitted for futher evaluation of progressive weakness after hip surgery and the need for placement to a rehab facility. The patient kept complaining of severe shoulder pain. Kelsey took it to a higher clinical level and suspected perhaps this just was not an ordinary shoulder pain with a patient presenting with progressive weakness a few days out post-operatively. Kelsey clinically suspected this symptoms although vague in presentation could be a possible ischemic event.
After speaking to the ED physician she decided to order a troponin. The first troponin was significantly elevated and she notified hospitalist and ED physician and then repeat troponin was doubled. Patients progressive weakness was from a NSTEMI which may been going on prior to coming to the ED. Kelsey stayed on top of it with reassessing the vital signs, and making sure the troponin levels were drawn in a timely manner following all ACS guidelines. Kelsey also kept cardiology informed along with hospitalist concerning all clinical changes.
This patient could have easily fallen through the cracks. Kelsey took a leadership role as well in terms of getting the appropriate labs and EKG without stepping out of her nursing scope of practice. The compassion Kelsey showed to this patient and family at the bedside explaining every part of her care and consistent updates up until the time the patient was transferred out of the ED for further cardiac intervention. Kelsey has the qualities that make an excellent nurse. She is silently bold but charismatic with obtaining the best clinical outcomes as she did that day. She is compassionate and relentless with exhibiting the very best in patient advocacy.
