I became a patient in the CVICU because I required cardiac surgery to repair/replace valves. Initially, the thought was only repair and possibly aortic valve replacement. In any case, Dr. K's team did what was best for me I am grateful for that, of course. I want to nominate nurse Kelsey for uniquely well-deserved recognition for several reasons: expert exceptional nursing skills, commendable leadership skills, and unparalleled compassion.

Kelsey was my nurse for a few days post-surgical procedure. In those days of care, I required quite a few direct care tasks/procedures, including changing IVs, removing central lines, and assisting in “maiden walks.” Kelsey was an expert at every nursing task. I was relieved, nearly pain-free; and very relaxed. She is extraordinary in her professional skills.

Before I became a teacher, I retired from the Navy as a hospital corpsman. I mention this to say that I have worked with many nurses and healthcare professionals. Kelsey is an outstanding leader. She maintains a calm and professional demeanor in every situation. In addition, she is a very capable team leader – willing and able to teach and help both her peers and patients. She was instrumental in clarifying information for me and my family and she spent time “advising” my daughter who is a nursing student. Best of all, Kelsey always demonstrates a genuine compassionate heart. How fortunate BUMCT (CVICU) is to have her on staff. I know that I am on a fast and healthy recovery because of Kelsey’s care!
