Kelsey Bunting is a great nurse who always pays close attention to small details and on this particular event, she helped save a patient's life. The patient had been experiencing chest pain with radiation to the shoulder and associated nausea during the day but there was no workup.
When Kelsey started her evening shift, she was immediately alarmed when the patient mentioned that she had these symptoms briefly earlier and that her chest was hurting again. Kelsey also noted the patient's blood pressure to be high and called an RRT. Results confirmed that the patient had experienced an NSTEMI and needed to get to the cardiac cath lab ASAP.
Kelsey worked diligently with the providers to get the patient to the lab quickly and efficiently. She also provided emotional support to the tearful patient who was nervous and was admitted to the hospital originally for non-cardiac issues.
After the procedure, Kelsey went to check on the patient who had been transferred to a higher level of care. This helped the patient feel comfort in a familiar face. Kelsey utilized the nursing process and the ICARE values to complete focused and extraordinary nursing care.
