Kelsey used a YouTube Harry Potter puppet show to distract the patient during the dressing change, even dancing to certain parts.
One of our current patients is unable to write this herself due to her developmental delay, but if she could write this, I’m sure she would. The patient came to us with very large wounds which required twice a day dressing changes. She was requiring strong IV pain medications prior to the treatment in order to tolerate them. After caring for the patient for several nights, Kelsey recognized the patient’s love of Harry Potter! Kelsey used a YouTube Harry Potter puppet show to distract the patient during the dressing change, even dancing to certain parts. The patient did so well, she did not require pain medication to get through the treatment. Kelsey passed on this information to the oncoming staff so the video was used with each dressing change then moving forward. Nursing truly at its best! The dressing change time became a “fun” time for the patient instead of one of pain.
