It took quite some time to get her hair clean, combed, and finished in braids but when she was done the patient was beaming.
Kelsey is the nurse I would want for my children if they were ever to need PICU-level care. She is a fierce patient advocate, dedicated teammate, and kind and compassionate nurse. I have witnessed several examples of her extraordinary and compassionate care over the years we've worked together. What always sticks out the most to me is how she is able to make our patients feel special, normal, and cared for in ways that often go unnoticed. I once walked into a room to find her giving a teenage girl a "spa" day. Early in the patient's ICU course, she was intubated for some time and once she was awake her hair was matted, tangled, and in pretty bad shape. She found conditioner, shampoo caps, combs, and everything needed to give her a good hair wash in bed as she was still unable to get to the shower and got to work. It took quite some time to get her hair clean, combed, and finished in braids but when she was done the patient was beaming. I have seen her do this multiple times for patients who are awake and sedated alike. She finds out what music patients who are sedated like and puts it on for them. She calls them by familiar names that their families use. She always talks to her patients (even those who are sedated). Things like this really make her stand out. She cares so deeply and does things to make patients comfortable even if they will never remember it and even when she thinks no one will know or notice. I am proud to work side by side with her and think we should all be more like Kelsey. She exhibits DAISY Attributes each and every shift she works.
