Kelsey searched for several days on different social media sites attempting to reach his family.
I am writing to share an exemplary nursing event. We are caring for a patient in the hospital with severe infective endocarditis who has been on mechanical ventilation for over a week. He is unable to move his arms, and due to the extent of his disease, unable to reliably communicate. Members of my team, including myself, have tried several means to reach his family. We have consulted palliative care to try to reach his family, and ethics has been involved to help determine a surrogate, as his family could not be found. A nurse taking care of him with us, searched for several days on different social media sites attempting to reach his family. Yesterday evening, she received a return message from his cousin, who alerted the rest of his family in Dallas. This morning, they all drove into Memphis and were at his bedside, expressing gratitude for the care that he has received and for the extra effort that she put forth to find them. His 13-year-old son is at bedside spending time with his father right now! These moments make medicine special, and provide a silver lining to an otherwise bleak situation. I share the feeling of gratitude with the family for what she did, and feel she went far above and beyond expectations.
