She told me Kelsey not only took care of her as a nurse but took the time to listen to her, hear her out, and make her feel human again.
Today, we are celebrating one of our nurses who has gone above and beyond to provide excellent patient and family care. Kelsey Hendrix was nominated by a patient and a staff nurse. They shared the following story with us:
I have been fighting Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer, and I have been in and out of different hospitals. The other hospitals just kind of blew me off, and it started making me lose hope. But, when I got here, Kelsey and the other nurses on this floor let me know that there are still people willing to care enough to help me. Kelsey has done an exceptional job taking care of me and has taken the extra time to talk to me, and make me feel human again, and she helped me have my hope back again. I feel like Kelsey should be recognized because she goes above and beyond the extra mile to help their patients.

€œI often only email with bad things or when something is broken or wrong (sorry), but this is something positive, and this patient's testimony is worth sharing and hearing! Especially after a rough few weeks! We have a patient currently asking to speak to nursing leadership/admin.
A Little background: She is a 44-year-old female battling stage 4 breast cancer with bone mets. She is no stranger to hospitalizations, but this is her first time here at VTHH, and she has been with us on the unit since admission. When I was performing nurse leader rounds and checking on patients, she began telling me her story, and she brought me to tears because she said she was so grateful for and pleased with her nursing care. She told me we are the first hospital she has stayed at that actually took the time to truly listen to her concerns and make sure her needs were met. She told me that every single unit nurse she had met was exceptional. She specifically brought up Kelsey Hendrix, RN.
She told me Kelsey not only took care of her as a nurse but took the time to listen to her, hear her out, and make her feel human again. She told me that at other hospitals she has been at, they are so consumed with her diagnosis that people forget she is a person. She told me she has been losing hope in her battle with cancer lately, and after talking with Kelsey, she again has some hope. Her husband was also at the bedside and told me, "This is the best dang hospital we have ever been to." She specifically asked to speak with nursing admin because, "I want them to know how great you guys are, I want everyone to know. Kelsey deserves some recognition." I let her know I would communicate this. The patient was so pleased that she told me, "I'm going to change doctors just so I can keep coming to this hospital when I need to."
