One particular worrisome, stressful night, Kelsey was an amazing patient advocate for my son. He was receiving his last dose of Rituximab and began to have hypotension. She went to the night resident several times voicing her concerns, but the resident was attempting to make a medical decision without actually coming to see my son. After her 3rd attempt, Kelsey said, "This is not going to work. He needs to come to see him now. I'm going to go get him and stand there until he gets up and comes in." Just a few minutes later, Kelsey and the resident came into my son's room.
When the resident saw a BP of highs 80s/40s in my 14-year-old son, he looked surprised and worried. Kelsey informed him that this had been the pattern. She told him that we had been waking him when it got this low and his BP would rise to 100s/60s, which is his baseline, but after a few minutes of a deep sleep, his BP would drop again. He instructed Kelsey to not change the rate of the Rituximab, for us to continue to occasionally wake my son and to come and get him again if it worsened so he could reevaluate and possible order a bolus and/or decrease the Rituximab rate. She was not only my son's advocate that night, but she was also his hero and I can't thank her enough.
