Before they could leave with the patient, they heard gunshots outside the ED, and the hospital lost power, plunging them into darkness.
Kelsey demonstrated exceptional dedication to her patient despite the remarkable demands placed upon her during a recent patient care experience. Kelsey provides the highest level of evidence-based, critical care, which was exemplified during a transport from a community hospital partner. The patient had been the victim of interpersonal violence and had been shot several times, resulting in life-threatening injuries. Kelsey and her paramedic partner responded to the sending facility, where they found an unstable patient requiring several immediate life-saving interventions. Kelsey assisted the attending physician with a chest tube insertion, performed rapid sequence intubation with her partner, and initiated blood transfusions to replace the patient's significant lost volume. While continuing to resuscitate the patient, it was reported that the alleged assailant was coming to the hospital to "finish the job." Kelsey and her partner continued working quickly to stabilize the patient and attempt to move them to the aircraft. Before they could leave with the patient, they heard gunshots outside the ED, and the hospital lost power, plunging them into darkness. Kelsey and her partner continued to work on their patient by the light of headlamps before barricading themselves in anticipation of an active shooter situation. Once it was established that the alleged assailant was in police custody and that the patient could be safely moved from the ED, Kelsey and her partner transported the patient to the aircraft and flew them to definitive care at VCU Health. The flight crew continued to provide life-saving care during transport and safely completed the mission, despite having experienced a significant personal threat and an emotionally distressing situation. I have the utmost respect for Kelsey and her partner for how they handled themselves in this situation and for the care they provided to their critically injured patient in the most distressing circumstances I've heard of.
