Kendall Giblet Duncan, RN
Kendall strongly advocated for an ICU patient who had been suffering for six weeks. His family members had stopped visiting and responding to calls. They indicated to Kendall that they needed his VA money in order to provide for their rent, and they were reluctant to make end-of-life goals of care decisions.
The hospital provided extensive critical care resources for this patient, making him as comfortable as possible, but despite this, the patient was suffering. After an Ethics consult, Kendall elevated her concerns to the physician team, her nurse manager, and her chief nurse. This prompted a call to the District Court Judge and initiated a team meeting with the attending and the Chief of Staff.
The decision was made not to escalate further care but not withdraw care. Kendall ensured that the patient was kept as comfortable as possible, and he passed away with dignity and the greatest of care. Her attention to this patient's needs truly advocated for someone who needed someone to be a voice for him.
