In October, Kendall served as the primary critical care nurse responsible for the emergent transport of an ECMO patient from the Rex operating room to UNC. This was only the third ECMO transport completed by Rex CCT, and from the moment the team was dispatched, Kendall demonstrated exceptional leadership, problem solving ability, and clinical excellence.
While en route to the patient, Kendall took initiative to organize the team by conducting a time out, ensuring all crew members were familiar with the newly established protocols for this type of high acuity transport. She clearly communicated roles and responsibilities, fostering teamwork and preparedness that set the tone for a safe and efficient mission.
At the patient’s bedside, Kendall provided outstanding critical care, ensuring the patient was appropriately sedated and that all medications, drips, and tubing were functioning and secure throughout the transport. Managing this level of complexity was no small feat- it required coordination among six staff members just to move the patient and equipment safely from the OR to the ambulance.
Kendall's calm demeanor under pressure, meticulous attention to detail, and strong leadership were instrumental in the success of this transport and in giving the patient the best possible chance for recovery. Her actions exemplify the highest standards of professionalism, teamwork, and compassionate care.
