We have a young man on 4 West, 34 years old. He was one of the first COVID patients who came to JFK Medical Center, 77 days to be exact. COVID was not kind to J as he was vented and trached very early on in his hospitalization and we have not been able to wean him off the ventilator. Imagine a 34-year-old, completely alert and oriented, being on a ventilator for such a prolonged period of time and not being able to see his family. We started to see his smile fade as he seemed to become more depressed and withdrawn. In walked Kendra Neto RN and the ANM, 2 caring and compassionate nurses who always go the extra mile for their patients. They came to me with a simple request. "Can we take J outside today so he can see his wife and feel the sunshine on his face?" How can you say "no" to that! I started making phone calls alerting everyone that needed to know with one special call to our favorite Respiratory Therapist, M. We asked M to help us with our plan and he of course said "yes." I think it's important to mention that M was not our therapist yesterday. He had other responsibilities on other units but he took the time out of his day to help this patient because M genuinely cares about his patients. We called J's wife and told her about our plan, she of course was thrilled! We moved J onto a stretcher. M took care of the portable ventilator and we brought J out into the sunshine where he was greeted by his wife! Such a beautiful sight! They hugged, they cried, we all cried! J told his wife that he is blessed to have such caring, wonderful nurses taking care of him! As J was visiting with his wife, we all looked at each other with tears in our eyes, as we were all thinking the same thing "this is why we became nurses." I think it is important to note that our little trip outside has made such a difference with J. Today he attempted to stand as we moved him from the bed to the chair. He has a new determination that wasn't there yesterday all because 2 nurses wanted to make a difference, and they did!
