Kennli Rogers, BSN, RN
Kennli embodies the very heart of nursing. She is exceptionally kind, deeply intelligent, and remarkably skilled, but what stands out most is the quiet sincerity with which she cares for others. Her compassion is never performative or self-serving; it is simply who she is. She gives of herself freely, without expecting recognition, praise, or anything in return.
There are many occasions I could share where Kennli has shown remarkable kindness and compassion to her patients. However, what I want to share next is why I believe she is an exceptional nurse and deserving of this prestigious award.
Recently, Kennli cared for a patient facing an unimaginably difficult situation. The patient, already battling metastatic cancer, was admitted after an infectious abscess was discovered within the brain tissue. Neurosurgical intervention was being considered to drain the abscess, but the patient, already exhausted from fighting so much for so long, began questioning whether pursuing surgery was truly what he wanted.
In one of the most vulnerable moments a person can experience, the patient shared with Kennli that he did not want to continue fighting at the expense of the peace and time he had left with his family. He expressed that he did not want to create more suffering for himself or those he loved. Instead, he hoped to spend the remainder of his life surrounded by family, with dignity and peace.
Many people can provide medical care. Far fewer can sit with another human being through the weight of fear, grief, mortality, and uncertainty with the level of grace that Kennli demonstrated.
She did not rush him, persuade him, or make him feel guilty for his feelings. Instead, she sat beside him with genuine compassion and reminded him that he still had autonomy, that his voice mattered, and that he had the right to decide what happened to his own body and life. She gently explained the available resources and supported him through an incredibly emotional and deeply personal decision with wisdom, empathy, and profound respect.
The patient expressed immense gratitude for Kennli's presence and support, and it was clear that her kindness brought him comfort during one of the darkest moments of his life.
Too often, we underestimate the impact a single human connection can have. Kennli's actions were a powerful reminder that nursing is not only about treatments, medications, or procedures—it is about humanity. She saw a person in pain and met him with dignity, compassion, patience, and understanding. She gave him the freedom to be honest about his fears without judgment, and that is an extraordinary gift.
What Kennli provided that day went far beyond excellent nursing care. She gave another human being peace, comfort, and the reassurance that he was seen, heard, and respected.
