I had the privilege to participate in the Walk a Mile in My Shoes job shadowing initiative. I was assigned to Kenyetta Hawkins, who is an RN in Hematology / Oncology. She was gracious enough to allow me to meet with her, ask her questions regarding her position and better understand the full scope of her position day in and day out.
I was then allowed to sit in on a patient interaction between Kenyetta and a Hematology / Oncology patient. Kenyetta's task was to education and inform the patient of the process and realities (side effects, etc.) associated with this patient's forthcoming cancer treatments.
I honestly struggle to find the appropriate words to describe what I witnessed. I witnessed a member of the Phoebe family extend a level of compassion and affection towards a total stranger, unlike anything I have ever witnessed before. I saw a patient and family member enter a room terrified of the unknown and leave after their encounter with Kenyetta with a rejuvenated spirit.
After we walked the patient to her treatment location we return back to her office and we were both emotional as a result of what we both just experienced. I knew there was a formal thank you or some words that I needed to say, but all that seemed appropriate for what I just witnessed was a big hug. So that is what Kenyetta received, a big bear hug from the HR guy.
I know we provide great service within our organization and I know the number of great experiences within our organization, outweigh the bad. This experience was affirmation of that reality. Can we make a difference in the lives of everyone we come in contact with? Maybe we can, maybe we can't, but I know without a shadow of a doubt, that there was one patient that entered our doors and before she left, a difference was made!
We are a great organization, made up of great people, doing great things and I appreciate being offered the ability to catch a glimpse of this greatness in motion. Kenyetta Hawkins, thank you for what you do and the role you play in making a difference in the lives of those patients you touch.
