I was admitted Wednesday to have my infected gall bladder removed. My post-op course was complicated by an ileus. On Thursday evening, I became very uncomfortable and knew something was wrong. My nurse Keri listened to my concerns and recommended that I have an NG tube placed to help me relieve my distress. She called the on-call physician who declined. She escalated the situation up through the ranks and fought for my care.
When finally she got the order to have the NG tube placed after advocating for me, we immediately drained 1.5 L of gastric juices. These gastric juices could have built up and caused me to aspirate the acids into my lungs. I feel Keri fought for me and saved my life. She reminds me of my daughter and felt she really cared for me. I want Keri to be recognized for the excellent care she gave me.
