His daughter walked over with her son and J couldn’t believe his eyes. J was so grateful and thankful for this day.
He looked so defeated and was begging for just one good day. On Wednesday Kerilyn was assigned to care for J. He went for a long walk in the unit and his trach got decannulated. It was a good day. Kerilyn was assigned to him again and decided he needed another good day. She called his daughter in the morning to see if she was coming today but she has a five-month-old baby who isn’t allowed to visit. He had only met his grandson once before being hospitalized. It was a beautiful day and Kerilyn decided to take him outside. She coordinated with the team that we would take him outside during his therapy that day. She let his daughter know the plan and asked if she could text her from her personal phone, letting her know this was just an idea, it wasn’t definite yet. She got permission from his surgeon and doctor to go outside as well. So, they hooked his cardiac monitor to the portable monitor and grabbed our emergency equipment, and put J in the wheelchair. They told him we were going on a field trip. She texted his daughter every step of the way. They hung out outside by the landscape next to the entrance and J was so happy to be outside. Then his daughter walked over with her son and J couldn’t believe his eyes. J was so grateful and thankful for this day. He had a wonderful half hour and since has been able to safely tolerate a diet and continues to see the best in each day. This week J finally left the hospital and starts his chapter of rehab. It was a good day for the patient, his family, and uplifted the morale of the staff.
