If one has to be in the hospital, then UMHW is the finest and best place to be. The doctors and nurses excel in their concern and care for their patients. While I spent a total of 12 days (4 one week and 8 the next) at UMHW, the nurses were all very caring and gave me excellent care, but one in particular stood out from the others. Her name is Kerri Carey. She has a calm and quiet, but confident demeanor about herself that gave me confidence in her care. She showed concern about my anxiety regarding lack of progress, at that time, in finding the cause of my having to be there and gave me reassurance that the doctors were working diligently at finding it. She always made sure I was comfortable and was very prompt in answering my call light. One day, after a rough night and seemingly miserable day, worried about what was happening to me, I must admit I was a bit ‘cranky.’ When my wife apologized to Kerri, she very kindly told her not to worry as she remembered me from the four days before when I was there and knew that this was not the ‘real’ me. To be concise, while Kerri did not have to do any medical heroics on me, her compassion and genuine concern, her kindness, and the efforts she made to reassure me all made my stay at UMHW as pleasant and comfortable as possible under the circumstances. It appears that Kerri knows that while taking vitals and giving meds and shots are an important part of her work, she also knows that giving good care with genuine concern for the patient as a person is just as meaningful and important to a patient’s well-being and healing. Kerri Casey is an extraordinary person and nurse. UMHW is blessed to have her, and I wholeheartedly nominate her for the DAISY Award.
