My daughter was admitted by ambulance to the emergency room unresponsive, burning with fever, turning blue and gasping for air. As you can imagine we were sick with worry as our daughter struggled to live. Once she was stabilized, we learned that she had aspiration pneumonia and 105 fever. After being in the ICU for three days, she was sent to room 312. During her recovery, she started to scream with pain in her back. It persisted for an entire day. The feedback from the nurses and diagnosis of the doctor was that it was muscular and a bad bed. When Kerri Hansen came on for the night shift, the screaming and pain increased. I was very upset to see my daughter in pain. What complicated the problem was that my daughter has Down's Syndrome and cannot communicate effectively what is wrong. This is where Kerri stepped in. I said to her that screaming is the only way my daughter can tell us that something truly is wrong. I explained that the diagnosis had been missed before because she couldn’t really tell us what was wrong. Kerri truly listened to me, understood the situation and with great persistence and persuasion engaged the doctor and gained his agreement to do a CT scan of her abdomen and pelvis. Thank God she fought so hard for my daughter as the problem was a flare up of her diverticulitis. Because of her, my daughter was treated successfully. The incredible and sincere compassion and caring she had for my daughter and myself was way above and beyond anything I have ever experienced in any hospital stay for myself or my daughter. Kerri demonstrated great professionalism, caring, listening skills and focus as she advocated for my daughter’s care. She is truly a cut above any nurse I have ever dealt with.
