He learned very quickly about Mom's preferences and made sure he accomplished them. He was able to anticipate Mom's needs before and after the CT scan.
My mom's inpatient story at Kaiser Los Angeles was very traumatic. She was transferred from Kaiser Downey to Kaiser LAMC - Sunset for an Angiogram. They found 3 blocked main arteries and Mom elected for a bypass surgery. She had been in Cardiac Care Unit waiting for her turn to undergo bypass procedure while waiting she was on a heparin drip during her 3rd night at CCU she had a hemorrhagic stroke caused by a rare side effect of heparin. They quickly moved her to Neuro ICU and Kevin was my mom's nurse that night.
She underwent a CT scan of the head which she dreaded because of her adverse reaction to contrast dye. She was so scared, but Kevin assured her that he won't leave her side and he did everything in his power to make sure Mom was comfortable. Kevin was the first male nurse my mom has encountered she was so impressed because Kevin was so gentle and very compassionate. He learned very quickly about Mom's preferences and made sure he accomplished them. He was able to anticipate Mom's needs before and after the CT scan. From giving her Tylenol before the scan to a simple cold compress on her forehead and NSS to flush the dye quickly after the scan.
When I met Kevin, he told me what happened to Mom in layman's terms I was impressed because he was able to explain it to me better than Mom's doctors did. He is very knowledgeable. He also told me what to expect and what to watch out for after Mom's stroke from his professional and personal experiences. While watching Kevin care for Mom I asked for some nursing tricks he could show me. He was very patient and very willing to teach me how to move a patient properly and comfortably, change the patient on the bed and make the bed. He was happy I was willing to learn, and I was happy to learn because I know Mom will be discharged at one point and caregiving will be part of our lives now. Kevin was able to anticipate our needs not just during hospitalization, but also prepared us for when we were discharged. The knowledge he shared was very helpful.
As my mom would say "I have encountered a lot of nurses during my 1 month and a half long stay at Kaiser, and I can tell Kevin has a heart like Florence Nightingale.”
