I have been a bedside nurse for 12 years and thus have had many nursing school students at my side to follow. This particular day we started off with one really sick patient we had to take to MRI on a ventilator and who was anxious. The family was a very scared family and had lots of questions and followed each nurse closely. He was very comfortable at the bedside and with assessment. He engaged in conversation with the family and educated them. He asked very appropriate questions to me and even displayed some good critical thinking. Upon arrival from a long MRI we got a code stroke patient from the emergency room. She was a young lady, nurse herself, with uncontrolled high blood pressure. She also was very nervous and required a lot of verbal reassurance and comforting. Even though Kevin is a "guy" he filled the role of comforter extremely well. He kept up the pace of an ICU with a really sick patient and then a new code stroke with frequent assessments because she had to get tPA. Due to the fact she was a code stroke, when a neuro bed came available, she had to be transferred there. This patient was in tears when we had to drop her off because she loved Kevin so much. She felt comfortable with him and had a hard time being changed although I assured her that our neuro ICU was fantastic. Kevin was in tears with her. It was heartwarming. He graciously thanked me upon leaving that day for my help and guidance and my care for the patients. We didn't get to sit very much that day and talk in depth because we were so busy but I sure appreciated him at the bedside. Thank the Lord we still have new RNs coming through that are ready to change the world one patient at a time like Kevin. He has the heart for nursing.
