It is truly a privilege to nominate Kevin for the DAISY Award. Although Kevin is assigned to the main ED, I often work alongside Kevin in the psychiatric ED, and I can confidently say that he is one of the most compassionate, dedicated, and patient-centered nurses I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Kevin has an extraordinary gift for connecting with patients. He doesn’t just treat their symptoms. He takes the time to listen, understand, and validate their feelings. No matter how overwhelmed or agitated a patient may be, Kevin approaches them with patience and empathy, creating a safe space where they feel heard and respected. In fact, we often joke and call him the “unit therapist” because of how willing and patient he is when it comes to hearing a patient out. His ability to provide that level of care, even in the most challenging situations, is truly remarkable.
Kevin’s impact doesn’t stop with his patients. He is always eager to teach and support others, especially our nursing students. He goes out of his way to engage with them, asking if they have questions and taking the time to provide thoughtful and thorough explanations. What’s most impressive is that Kevin doesn’t limit his guidance to just psych-related questions. If a student is curious about anything, he’s more than willing to share his knowledge and experience, ensuring that every interaction is an opportunity for learning and growth. The entire staff is always excited when Kevin is on shift as our medical nurse. His calm, positive presence not only uplifts his colleagues but also helps the unit run more smoothly. You can feel the difference when Kevin is there. He brings a sense of stability and teamwork that makes the environment better for everyone.
