On his final day, Kevin provided him and my family with the most compassionate care, dignity, and respect that I have ever experienced.
I would like to nominate a very special nurse for a DAISY Award. He was such a kind and caring nurse through the entirety of my husband’s passing, not only making him comfortable in his last hours but was kind and compassionate to our entire family. He afforded us privacy but also checked on our needs throughout this experience. He was truly an angel during this very difficult time - from start to finish. He is surely an example of a competent and loving nurse. He was such a blessing to all of us. Thank you so much for your love and support.

My stepfather had been hospitalized at Mercy Hospital for 2 weeks early this year. He had been experiencing complications involving a lung bleed, likely due to his immunosuppressant drug for his heart transplant done 19 ½ years ago. During the second week of his hospitalization, he passed away.

However, I would like to acknowledge the incredible care he and my family received during his 2-week stay. There is one exceptional nurse whom I would like to especially acknowledge. On his final day, Kevin provided him and my family with the most compassionate care, dignity, and respect that I have ever experienced. Kevin was so gentle with my stepfather and respectful of my family that day.

I remember that he had placed a special quilt on my stepfather as we all sat with him during his final hours of life. I could see just how careful Kevin was with how he cared for his patient by how gentle he was with treating him, how he was in constant communication with my family during his shift, and respectful of our decision to remove all comfort care supportive devices he was receiving in order to begin the final transition. Kevin worked closely with my family, treating us with respect and care like we were part of the care team.

During and after the time of my stepfather's death, Kevin allowed my family to stay with him and take all the time we needed to say our goodbyes. We never felt rushed. He was so compassionate at what was the most difficult time in our lives which helped us to feel comforted. I work in a healthcare setting and have had many experiences as a caregiver for loved ones being treated in the hospital. I have been so pleased with the level of care and respect that the healthcare staff gave my stepfather as well as my family, and especially Kevin.
