The caller shed many tears during this moment of sharing and gratitude with an emphasis on how much it meant not only to the veteran but to all who loved him for this move to happen this way.
I became aware of Kevin’s extraordinary commitment to veterans on Monday when I received a call from D, a lifelong friend of a Proud Marine who spent one short week on Ward 1D Hospice before joining family members who had “gone on ahead” of him. This man had certainly known sorrow. There were many at the “next place” to greet him. The young, Proud Marine was accepting of the move from ward 3F to ward 1D Hospice. His special request was to walk to his new ward. It is a rare occurrence to not be transported by wheelchair, or even in a bed. It is certainly easier and faster to transport people in this manner. D said “someone” here made sure his request was honored. She did not know who did this for the veteran. She shared that there were not enough words to adequately express the depth of her gratitude and the gratitude of all who loved this man. D also shared that the sending ward had a walk of honor when he left his ward to come to 1D. As we “insiders” know, a walk of honor is for those who have passed. Still, I did not question her. She stated that the veteran told her they had a walk of honor for him. I was able to identify Mr. Penttila as the individual who facilitated the patient’s transfer and shared D’s feedback and depth of gratitude for making this happen. Mr. Penttila confirmed that indeed, Staff lined the halls in a manner as if for a Walk of Honor. It was indeed a walk of honor…. A living Walk of Honor. The caller shed many tears during this moment of sharing and gratitude with an emphasis on how much it meant not only to the veteran but to all who loved him for this move to happen this way. Soon there were tears from both ends of the telephone line, hers and mine. He had shared this with her, “I told them I want to walk to the room where I will die”.
