With my mother's worsening condition of late stage COPD the option was to await blood gases and intubate, since the bipap was no longer effective, or keep her comfortable. The decision was made to make her comfortable. Kia was the nurse caring for my mother that particular night as she had been nights previous. We were encouraged to call our family in to visit my mother while she had some alert moments. All my children came to visit their grandma including my six-year-old daughter. My six-year-old demands a lot of attention. She is inquisitive and very social. She would not leave Kia alone, asking every question under the sun. The rest of us were busy talking with family and wrapping our minds around the situation. I happened to notice that Kia was so patient and kind to answer her questions, took her time with my mother and my daughter, all while getting her nursing tasks done. She educated and allowed participation where appropriate for my daughter in the care of my mother. She took her time and she showed compassion. She is an extraordinary nurse. Kia cared for my mother first and involved and informed my family. When my mother was sent to hospice, Kia was just starting her shift. She came to send prayers before my mother left. She wanted to say good-bye to us. We will never forget her.
