Kierra is the reason that my hand was saved. I'm grateful to her for listening and advocating for me.
Kierra, had a patient go for a CT scan at the beginning of the shift. There were some IV issues while having the CT. When the patient got back from the scan she alerted Kierra who notified the MD. Kierra kept a close watch on the patient and notified the primary team later in the shift who got Ortho involved with her arm. After everything that happened the patient spoke with one of the charge nurses to tell her what went RIGHT, and that was you! She said, "I've had Kierra twice now, and she has been my angel! She is caring, and an excellent nurse. She really knew something was wrong right away and got her charge nurse. Orthopedics came up soon afterward and decided that she had to go to class A surgery for compartment syndrome and had a fasciotomy and later in the week a washout. Kierra is the reason that my hand was saved. I'm grateful to her for listening and advocating for me." The MD told the patient after surgery that if Kierra had not acted when she did by alerting the charge nurse and the MDs the patient would have lost her arm. Kierra did a wonderful job staying on top of the situation and being an advocate for her patient. Even an experienced nurse might have missed this but as a nurse for 6 months, this was extraordinary.
