Kieu demonstrates so many positive attributes that are the hallmark of an excellent all-around nurse. Her clinical and technical skills are above-reproach. She encountered and approached each clinical event with confidence and skill. These strong clinical and technical skills are the most important foundation in an extraordinary nurse. Another strong attribute of Kieu's was incredibly strong interpersonal skills. She is clearly quite bright and communicates with me as her patient at whatever level the situation calls for. She was warm, but firm and supportive during a hypoglycemic episode.
She learned quickly that my most debilitating symptom during this admission was nausea. She called my doctor and arranged for the optimization of my anti-emetic therapy. She was funny and engaging while remaining appropriate and professional. She introduced herself and her purpose for our immediate interaction, addressed any questions or concerns which I brought up and exited courteously by telling me when her next scheduled room visit was. Every time Kieu let me know that I could call her at any time before that if any need arose. Ironic as it may seem, by empowering me in this manner, I found myself less anxious and less prone to call prematurely...even though I knew she would be there.
She was a wonderful patient advocate for me when a potentially serious incident occurred involving a mistake by clinical labs. Throughout the three days that I was her patient, Kieu unfailingly exhibited technical skill, professionalism, and an upbeat and engaging attitude. She is bright and dedicated and clearly an asset to her profession, to her community, and to the SM-UCLA Health Center.
