Seeing that the unit was short-staffed after the end of his shift, he agreed to work an additional 4 hours, extending his shift to 16 hours.
Kim demonstrated exceptional teamwork and patient care during an extremely eventful shift. He was informed that one of his patients was set for discharge. On assessment, he observed a change in the patient’s mental status and gait. Kim paged the attending physician to inform him of the change and his concern for the patient’s safety.

As the shift went on the patient became increasingly confused and agitated, eventually requiring a companion. As an outside companion was not available, the unit’s PCNA assumed the role. Kim took it upon himself to complete many of the tasks the PCNA was unable to do while sitting with the confused patient.

Later in the shift, Kim answered the call bell of a patient whose nurse was at lunch. This patient needed to use the bathroom. Despite caring for a full assignment, including the confused patient, and assisting with PCNA tasks, Kim made time to assist the patient. After a short period, he checked on the patient and noticed she was nonresponsive and hunched over. He called for assistance from another nurse and informed another caregiver to call a rapid response.

After the chaos of the rapid subsided, Kim was still left to continue to help his confused patient. He advocated for his patient to be placed on a unit which could better care for his acute medical needs. Kim continued to collaborate with the attending physician throughout the day until the patient was moved to a medical unit.

Throughout all the events of the day Kim never interrupted the care of the other patients on the floor. In fact, seeing that the unit was short-staffed after the end of his shift, he agreed to work an additional 4 hours, extending his shift to 16 hours. Kim showed the values of hard work, teamwork, compassion, and dedication.
