As a daughter of a patient, who is a retired nurse, in Kaiser Redwood City Hospital in the ICU recovering from a serious brain surgery, I was fortunate to have a nurse who truly made a meaningful difference in her care. His name was Kim, and he went above and beyond to ensure that she was comfortable, informed, and cared for during her time in the hospital.
One situation that stands out to me is when my mom was experiencing severe pain after her surgery. She was unable to get out of bed and was struggling to find relief. Kim noticed her distress and immediately acted. He stayed by her side, holding her hand, and reassuring her that he would do everything in his power to help her feel better. Instead of simply administering medication and leaving the room, Kim took the time to listen to my mom’s concerns and understand the root of her pain. He collaborated with the doctors and adjusted my mom’s medication, made sure she was positioned comfortably and even played soothing music to help her relax.
